Challenge Accepted: I've signed up for Plastic Free July

Are you participating in Plastic Free July? It's a really simple campaign that aims to raise awareness of the amount of plastic we use by encouraging people to eliminate single-use plastic during July. Australians send one million tonnes of plastic to landfill each year. Yikes! The environmental impact of this is staggering. I don't want to get preach-y or focus on the negatives, but if you want to put plastic use into perspective, take a deep breath and google ‘great pacific garbage patch’.

These past few years I've tried to be more mindful about my plastic use but ABC's War on Waste was just the encouragement (freak out) I needed to sign up to Plastic Free July. For the month of July I'll be sharing my weekly struggles, my successes and hopefully a few plastic-free hacks to get me through the month without too many tears.

I'm most excited about changing my habits for the better. I do okay but I know there's so much I could improve. I need to stop getting my oats, lentils, nuts and other basics in plastic bags and not giving in to purchasing plastic-wrapped treats.

I'm most worried about having to go the extra mile to find cheese that hasn't been wrapped in plastic. I know it sounds really silly, but it's what I'm most concerned about. I don't consume much dairy, but I do love cheese and like to treat myself to a bit of dairy bliss once a week in the form of cheesy pasta, risotto or a good old cheese plate and bread. I'll also miss my mid-week fancy superfood smoothie which comes served in a plastic cup. I wonder if they'd pour my smoothie into a drink bottle for me if I asked them nicely?

Are you going plastic free too? Plastic Free July has a great list of resources to get you ready. I also love Treading My Own Path, a sustainable living blog by Lindsay Miles who is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to going plastic-free.

I'm excited to share my plastic free month of July with you. Let us know in the comments below if you're going plastic free too!
